Typhoons Blown Away by Tigers

The Dundee Tigers romped to an 8-1 victory over the Moray Typhoons in a one sided match at Dundee Ice Arena on Sunday night.

The Taysiders looked in fine form early in the game and controlled possession deep inside the Moray defensive zone. This pressure yielded a penalty to Stuart Fergusson and the Tigers took full advantage of the resultant power play with Andy Henderson getting the home team on the board in the 7th minute. 2 minutes later Paul Guilcher linked up with Grant Reekie and Eck Purves to double the Tigers lead and within 60 seconds Mark McLeod made it 3 as he drove the net and picked up the rebound from Lee Tosh's shot to smash the puck home. Tigers continued to dominate and successfully killed of 2 penalty situations before the period closed.

The second period got underway with the Typhoons a man down as Scott Ogg was assessed a holding penalty at close of play in the first. Despite numerous scoring chances the Typhoons survived, but not long after the Moray side returned to full strength Tigers notched their 4th of the night as Grant Reekie got his name on the score sheet. Stuart Barnett joined the list of scorers at the midway point of the game as he fired home from a feed from Reekie for Tigers fifth. Ross Bree linked up with Mark McLeod for goal number 6 of the night with 32 minutes played before Guilcher grabbed his second and Tigers 7th with another assist going to playmaker Reekie just over 2 minutes later. Robbie Balfour replaced Mark McGill in the home goal for the final 5 minutes of the period and was easily equal to the sporadic attack of the Typhoons as the session concluded with Tigers holding a commanding lead in to the final 20 minutes.

The Tigers looks like they had engaged cruise control in the 3rd period with some of their earlier intensity clearly missing which did allow the visitors more time on the puck and more opportunities to test Balfour. Penalties to Callum Turnbull and Mark McLeod gave the Typhoons 2 separate chances with the additional man but they were unable to mount a comeback. Richy Fox was on target for Tigers 8th goal of the night with less than 5 minutes remaining, Eck Purves acting as provider again to set up the play. The Typhoons refused to give up however and with the clock showing three and a half minutes remaining the visitors got their consolation goal through a speculative, long range shot from Scott Ogg which

took a wicked deflection to wrong foot Balfour and settle in the back of the net for the final goal of the night.

Tigers will be pleased with the 2 points and their performance in the first 2 periods but must now turn their attention to a run of away games that will have a major effect on the outcome of their season, starting this Sunday in Edinburgh against a resurgent Capitals side.

Final score: Dundee Tigers 8 - Moray Typhoons 1

Tigers man of the match: Stuart Barnett.
