Tigers Fall as Capitals Spring to Victory

The Dundee Tigers ended their season trophy-less as they were downed 4-7 on the night and 6-13 on aggregate by the Edinburgh Capitals in the Autumn Cup Final

With a 4 goal deficit to overcome after a 6-2 defeat in the 1st leg of the Autumn Cup Final the Tigers came out of the blocks flying. The first shift saw Paul Guilcher latch on to a pass from Grant Reekie only to be denied by Craig Mallinson in the visitors goal. The Tigers ambition to reclaim the tie was clear as they continued to assault the Capitals net. Dead on the 10 minute mark though it was the Capitals who extended the aggregate gap and Mark Paterson found space and fired home. Just a minute and a half Later Paul Guilcher brought the Tigers back level as he shot high over Mallinson’s shoulder after Reekie’s faceoff win.

Another strong start to the period saw Tigers surround the Capitals net but some confusion around the Tigers net allowed Jay King to fire home from the point in the 23rd minute. Within 3 minutes Tigers were level again as Andy Henderson beat Mallinson with a powerplay marker. Things went downhill rapidly after the midpoint of the period as within the space of a minute Paterson completed his hat-trick with 2 quick-fire goals in the 36th and 37th minute and conclude the period’s scoring.

With dreams of silverware looking farfetched the Tigers set out upon the closing stanza undeterred. Paterson ended any hopes of a dream comeback when he scored his 4th and Capitals 11th in the 46th minute and Kieran Black and Joel Gautschi piled on the pain with a pair of points either side of the 50 minute mark. Tigers did peg a couple of goals back as the period closed through Mark McLeod and Paul Guilcher but the Capitals saw out the game and the tie with a convincing margin of victory.
