Tigers Progress as Comets Fall From the Sky

The Dundee Tigers came from behind twice to claim victory over local rivals Dundee Comets by the tightest of margins on Sunday night in the Scottish Cup.

The game got underway in typical derby style – High tempo, passionate and with plenty of physical presence from both teams. Ciaran Hoggan in the Tigers net and Matty Michie at the opposite end were called in to action in the opening exchanges with each showing that it would take pin point precision to beat them. The Comets arguably had the best of the possession in the first period and with the session drawing to a close Robbie Hill made that possession count as he squeezed home the opening marker with less than 20 second remaining.

Tigers needed a reaction in the second period and they got it. In just the 2nd minute of the session Scott Geddes floated a beautiful wrister in to the top of the net to bring the teams level. Comets were quickly back on top however as Lewis Gold finished off a neat passing play with just 5 minutes of the period gone. Tigers killed off a penalty half way through the session before being stonewalled when on a 5 on 3 powerplay as the period closed with no further scoring.

The Tigers squandered another 5 on 3 opportunity early in the third session but there was a noticeable spring in their step. Their efforts were rewarded with 8 minutes remaining as Scott Marr showed tremendous tenacity to pounce on a loose puck in front of the Comets goal and knock it home. With the game tied at 2 apiece and penalty shots looming Grant Reekie found himself streaking down the left wing. His quick release apparently flummoxed Michie in Comets net and the puck found its way through the keeper’s five-hole to give the Tigers the lead for the first time in the game. A penalty to Scott Marr in the 59th minute looked to give the Comets a lifeline before Robbie Brown was assessed a misconduct 20 seconds later and the period finished with a session of 4 on 4 hockey and no further scoring.

Tigers now progress to the Scottish Cup Semi-final against the Edinburgh Capitals – Date TBC

Final Score : Comets 2 – Tigers 3

Man of the Match: Grant Reekie
