Dundee Tigers 4 - Edinburgh Capitals 7

The Tigers faced league leaders, Edinburgh Capitals, in Autumn Cup action on Monday night as they faced the task of over turning a 6-0 deficit from the first leg. With both teams close to full strength the scene was set for a tough contest but it wasn’t one the hosts were daunted by. Opening exchanges were all in Tigers favour but they were stung on the counter attack as Callum Boyd was allowed to break free from a turnover in the Edinburgh End and fire home despite the best efforts of a determined Tigers back check. Chances fell to both sides as the period continued and Tigers were rewarded as Dan Topping ripped a slapshot beyond Craig Mallinson in the Capitals net with just over 2 minutes of the period remaining.

The second period started with a bang as Paul Guilcher popped the puck home in the opening minute. 2 minutes later and the Capitals were back level through Sean Donaldson’s neat powerplay finish. The goals continued with Grant Reekie netting Tigers 3rd in the 24th minute before the hosts gave up another powerplay on which Neil Hay converted to tie things up at 3 apiece. Tigers had a powerplay opportunity of their own in the 27th minute but some defensive confusion allowed Mark Patterson to break free on the Tigers goal and put the Caps ahead by 1 on the night. Another Tigers penalty led to another Capitals powerplay goal with 2 minutes left in the period as Joel Gautschi converted to make it 5-3 to the visitors before Richy Fox brought the deficit back to just a single goal on the night in the final minute of the period.

Tigers penalty woes continued as the 3rd period got underway and the Capitals took advantage of 2 early opportunities with the extra man. Sean Donaldson scored in the 54th minute before Sean Beattie finished off the scoring with a slick individual effort for the Capitals 7th of the night (and 5th on the powerplay). Tempers flared as the period continued with Craig Wilson squaring off with Sean Donaldson after the later inflicted a cut to the eye of the former with a dangerous buttend. The game ended with a scoreline that somewhat flattered the winners on the night but was convincing on aggregate.

Final Score: Tigers 4 – Capitals 7 (Agg. 4-13)
